Why Hemp Paper?
What is so great about paper made from a hemp-base, rather than the wood-based paper we see everything made out of? There are quite a few reasons why hemp paper is better than wood paper. And yes, there are more hemp paper products out there than just your favorite RAW hemp rolling papers and Marleys
The most obvious benefit to using hemp paper is the output volume of hemp plants compared to trees. How long does it take a tree to fully grow to be ready to use for paper production? Maybe 20- 30- even 40+ years? Hemp reaches its full height in one season, and naturally fertilizes the soil it grows in, meaning that patch would be ready to grow at the beginning of next years season. Not only that, but the amount of paper you could make with hemp plants in a single 1-acre plot, is equal to the amount trees would produce in about 3 or 4 acres. This is because hemp plants can grow very close to each other, whereas trees need room to widely spread their roots to grow to full potential.
So, hypothetically speaking, if you were to plant one acre of hemp, and one acre of trees, only to be used for paper production, the hemp field would produce as much as 100 times the paper as what the tree field would by the time the trees were ready to be harvested!
Because hemp paper is naturally acid-free, it lasts much longer than any tree-based paper, and is 100% biodegradable. If all of the paper we used today was made of hemp, there would almost be no use for paper recycling bins because hemp itself is a renewable resource because its ability to grow so quickly.
Hemp Paper in History
If hemp makes such great paper, what has been its role in history? Good think you asked, because the first paper created by man was actually made from crushed hemp fibers! In fact, up until the late 1800s and the dawn of the industrial revolution, as much as 90% of all paper in the entire world was made from hemp. Even the drafts of the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were written on hemp paper.
It is very clear to us that the legalization of hemp for industrial purpose in the United States would have a huge impact on our economy and environment. We can only hope to see that day come!
